CONSERVATIVE councillors attended remembrance services across South Lanarkshire as the UK marked 100 years since the armistice that ended the first world war.

Standing alongside counterparts from each of the other parties, the area’s local elected representatives paid tribute to all the men and women killed in that conflict and the many since.

In Clydesdale, Councillor Colin McGavigan said: “The council’s officers and staff have done a wonderful job in creating a series of events that fittingly remember those who didn't come back, but who allowed us the freedoms we enjoy.

“It is all about the great men and women who served their country. I should like to thank and pay tribute to each of them.”

Councillor Poppy Corbett commented: “I was so proud to attend the service of remembrance in Carluke.

“It was a lovely morning and there was an excellent turnout, including people of all ages, which was great to see.”

Hamilton’s Councillor Mark McGeever said: “It is fitting that we gather to remember the lives lost, and to honour the priceless contribution of men and women to whom we owe our most cherished freedoms.

“Around the world people stand in the same silent tribute; recognising then tragedy of each individual’s loss, mindful of the terrible cost of conflict, and hopeful for a future in which it is consigned to the past.

“We the living owe a debt that can never be repaid. But we will remember them.”
