The committee also discussed the changes needed to allow Community Councils to meet online and make decisions. Currently the powers of Community Councils to hold meeting are set down in the “South Lanarkshire Council’s Scheme of Establishment of Community Councils” which requires that all meetings be held in a public setting with its members and the public being physically present.
While the Conservative Group support the changes required, Cllr Alex Allison who represents Clydesdale East commented: “It is of course necessary for these changes to be made under the present conditions to allow Community Councils to continue to function. Unfortunately, many people within South Lanarkshire will not be able to participate in online community council meetings due to the lack of broadband service in the rural communities."
"When we are once again able to physically meet in numbers – Community Councils should resume meeting in public settings so that those without the online connections are able to participate in their community councils.”
